In a time of rapid cultural and legal change, the transgender community and allies in Virginia are facing new challenges—and new opportunities.
Trans Futures: Navigating Change Together brought together community members, advocates, legal and policy experts, health providers, and allies for a day of learning, dialogue, and action.
About Trans Futures
Laws and attitudes about transgender people are changing quickly in Virginia. These changes bring both new problems and new chances to make progress.
Trans Futures: Navigating Change Together was a one-day event for transgender people, their families, friends, and supporters, as well as experts in law, health, and policy.
Trans Futures included:
keynote speakers, workshops, and discussions about important issues facing the transgender community today, and was especially mindful of issues related to the Black Trans community.
information about recent laws, how to handle challenges, and ways to find and share resources. Allies learned how they can give stronger and more effective support.
social activities where people connected and celebrated who they are, and build a network of support.
Participants reported leaving the day feeling stronger, better informed, and ready to work together for fairness, respect, and safety for transgender people of all ages in Virginia.
Sponsors: Charley Burton and Equality Virginia (in collaboration and discussion with community organizations and volunteers).
